Port of Newcastle’s ESG Strategy articulates its dedication to responsible corporate behaviour and presents a comprehensive 20 year plan that aligns with the organisation’s key strategic initiatives. Environmental, Social and Governance (ESG) considerations, encompassing both risks and opportunities, are seamlessly integrated into the core business strategy and the organisational culture. This proactive stance enables us to not only mitigate potential environmental, legal and reputation risks, but to bolster Board oversight, amplify employee engagement and positively shape customer conduct.

Sustainability Advantage

Port of Newcastle is committed to adopting sustainable practices and has been recognised for outstanding environmental achievement and leadership as a Gold Partner of Sustainability Advantage, a program of the NSW Government’s Office of Energy and Climate Change.

EcoPorts

As the first port in Australia or New Zealand to become a member of the International EcoPorts network, Port of Newcastle has been working across the Pacific region to advocate for the benefits of the EcoPorts initiative. EcoPorts provides a consistent and globally-recognised approach to environmental management in the Port sector.

GRESB

In 2019 Port of Newcastle participated in its first GRESB assessment to benchmark the Port against other ports globally. Since 2019, Port of Newcastle has continued to increase the GRESB score achieving five stars for three years in a row with a score of 95 in 2022.

United Nations SD Goals

Port of Newcastle’s approach to sustainability aligns with the principles of the UN Sustainability Goals to promote prosperity whilst protecting the planet.

United Nations Global Compact

Port of Newcastle has become a signatory to the UN Global Compact, committing to the 10 principles relating to human rights, anti-corruption, environment and labour.

Decarbonisation

Port of Newcastle has committed to Science Based Target Initiatives (SBTi) 1.5 degree 2030 targets for Scope 1 and 2 emissions. Port of Newcastle has undertaken comprehensive studies to understand its Scope 1, 2 and 3 emissions baseline. The Port has committed to Net Zero emissions by 2040 which includes Scope 1 and Scope 2 and Scope 3 emissions that Port of Newcastle can strongly influence.

In 2020, led by the Port’s Employee Engagement Forum, employees from across the business helped to define a new set of values that reflect our workplace culture and support our plans for the future.

Port of Newcastle’s values influence how we develop our strategy, how we measure performance, how we treat our colleagues and how we approach our work. These are a guiding compass, a north star for everything we do at Port of Newcastle.
