It is with disappointment that Port of Newcastle announces the well-loved Port Litter Pick will be postponed to later in the year. This decision is a direct result of the measures the Port has put in place to protect staff, customers and the community from the spread of COVID-19. The safety of staff and the community is the Port’s top priority.
The annual Port Litter Pick is an important community event in which staff from businesses across the port roll up their sleeves to get involved.
Port of Newcastle appreciates the commitment to sustainable practises that employees, tenants and port users show by participating in this annual event.
About the Port Litter Pick
The annual Port Litter Pick is one of many ways the Port is helping to protect the local environment.
Established in 2018, the clean-up provides port-related businesses and employees the opportunity to roll up their sleeves to get involved in a community initiative.
In 2019, the event attracted 87 people from 13 port-related businesses, including Australian Rail Track Corporation (ARTC), Port Authority of NSW, Cargill Australia, Linx Cargo Care, Newcastle Coal Infrastructure Group, Kooragang Bulk Facilities/ Tomago Aluminium, Impact Fertiliser, Sims Group Australia, Port of Newcastle, Koppers, Newcastle Stevedores, Custom Transportable Buildings and Newcastle Yacht Club.
Together, participants collected 1.64 tonnes of rubbish from around the Port. The waste collected ranged from cigarette butts, plastic bags and soft drink cans through to old tyres, scrap metal and an ironing board.
ARTC took home the Litter Legends’ trophy, after collecting 400 kilograms of rubbish from the rail corridor, the largest haul from all participating teams.
All rubbish is collected using biodegradable bags and gloves and is sorted for recycling where possible.
