Following the refurbishment of the Tippler Bridge, safe community access to the Carrington Foreshore area is once again accessible. The Tippler Bridge connects Carrington with the Hunter River Foreshore and has a long history.
The name ‘Tippler’ refers to the bridge’s close proximity to Tippler House, which was built to support the Basin Coal Loader and came into operation in 1967. The bridge was constructed so workers could safely access the amenities block and other operational areas without having to cross the rail lines on foot.
The once in half half-a-century upgrade required full removal of the bridge span to complete structural repairs, the inclusion of all new protective coatings, replacement of the concrete walkway and the installation of new energy efficient LED lighting.
The $1.3-million project commenced in October 2021 and was completed in December 2021 and ensures the Port of Newcastle continues to provide safe access to this much-loved community amenity for locals and visitors alike.
Scope of works
The Tippler Footbridge upgrade works included:
- Removal of the footbridge walkway in sections and transportation to an offsite facility for repairs
- Installation of a new concrete walkway within the footbridge
- Structural repairs and protective coating renewal of entire footbridge
- Upgrade of the current halogen-based lighting with new energy efficient LED lighting
