Mobile Harbour Cranes

Port of Newcastle’s existing project cargo, general cargo and container handling capability will be further enhanced following a $28.4-million investment in two Liebherr LHM 550 mobile harbour cranes and associated infrastructure at the Port’s versatile Mayfield 4 berth.

This investment is part of the Port’s assertive diversification agenda to realise the potential of the region’s international trade gateway. The investment is about improving efficiencies, growing diversified trade and creating better outcomes for current customers, as well as positioning the Port as a viable option to attract new customers, particularly in regional and rural NSW.

Port of Newcastle are firmly focused on maximising opportunities that will create a broad mix of trade opportunities to support local industry, boost jobs in addition to the 9000 positions the Port directly and indirectly supports now, and build a prosperous local, state and national economy.

The mobile harbour cranes arrived in August 2022 and will undergo a commissioning phase which includes rigorous testing prior to operation.

Port of Newcastle is committed to keeping local residents and customers informed and working closely with the community and stakeholders to ensure a smooth transition to commissioning and operating these important pieces of infrastructure. Project updates will be provided.
