Maintenance dredging of the Port of Newcastle is undertaken on a continual basis to provide safe, deep-water access to the port.

Port of Newcastle's dredge, the David Allan, operates 12 hours per day, seven days per week. Dredging of the commercial shipping channel is programmed based on vessel safety.

For current depths refer to the Port Authority of New South Wales website.

The Port of Newcastle's dredger works in conjunction with the survey team that provides the information to inform the development of the dredging program and priorities.

The port's survey vessel, JT Gowlland, is equipped with a multi-beam echo sounder, inertial motion sensor and sub-centimetre GPS positioning system that measure the depth of the harbour and berth areas.
