Port of Newcastle asks the surfing and fishing community to look out for a navigation buoy which came adrift off Stockton today.
The buoy is drifting south along the coastline and was last sighted off Bar Beach.
The red and black buoy is made of steel and weighs approximately 15 tonnes. As it may still have a 60 metre chain attached, community members are asked to maintain a safe distance.
The buoy is fitted with a solar powered white flashing light.
Port of Newcastle will continue to monitor the buoy and will attempt to recover it tomorrow when it approaches the shore.
Further information on the type of buoy is available here: https://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Isolated_danger_mark
