Moving large or oversized cargo? Port of Newcastle's capacity, connectivity and capability can simplify your supply chain and remove costly cargo handling steps. Read on to discover five reasons why Port of Newcastle should be your first-choice East Coast port for project cargo.
1. Room to move

Whether you're transporting a one-off rail shipment or Australia's largest wind turbines, Port of Newcastle is ready to accommodate all your storage and staging requirements. Take your pick from short or long term, covered or uncovered storage areas. Our large portside storage areas enable cargo in all shapes and sizes to be stored onsite and progressively moved to the project site as required.

With proven capability to successfully cater for wind turbine imports, Port of Newcastle makes life easier for the cargo owners and logistics providers through our ability to store multiple shipments while turbines are prepared for after-hours transport. We eliminate costly and time-consuming handling steps for a more efficient logistics solution.

Our open access berths are unconstrained by overhead infrastructure, and the reconfiguration of internal port roads allows for easy transportation of extra-long, bulky cargoes from the berth to our nearby storage areas and onto the motorway network.

2. East Coast's only berth-side rail line
In 2018, Port of Newcastle handled more than 500 rail assets, including wagons, locomotives and passenger cars.

As the only port on Australia's East Coast with berthside rail access, Port of Newcastle provides customers with a distinct advantage thanks to its direct ship to rail connection. This reduces costly cargo handling steps and ensures a seamless journey from the port to the project site along the uncongested rail network servicing Newcastle and greater NSW. Port of Newcastle also has the flexibility to securely store and stage shipments on its large parcels of berth-side land prior to transportation.
3. Ro-Ro capability

Port of Newcastle's superior operational infrastructure and multi-purpose facilities can cater for roll-on roll-off vessels up to 265 LOA. We have proven capability in handling Ro-Ro vessels for the delivery of cars, and other project cargoes including equipment for the mining, agricultural, construction and rail industries.

Port of Newcastle offers an ocean of opportunity for Ro-Ro shipments and customers wanting to take advantage of its location, direct transport connections and available storage areas.

4. Connectivity
Capital city peak hour traffic is getting worse. Port of Newcastle benefits from direct and uncongested connections to national heavy vehicle routes and a rail network designed for large trade volumes. It makes sense to import, store and stage cargo via the Port of Newcastle - then truck or rail it to the project site at your convenience.

5. Customer care

We're more than just a port. From the initial enquiry through to the arrival at the final destination, Port of Newcastle takes a partnership approach to providing expertise and support that is second to none. We will work with key logistics service providers, including freight forwarders, stevedores, transport and heavy haulage customers to identify and deliver efficiencies and cost savings for the benefit of the customer.
