Following an extensive recruitment process, Port of Newcastle is pleased to announce the appointment of Craig Carmody as incoming Chief Executive Officer (CEO) of Port of Newcastle.

Mr Carmody has a deep understanding of the Australian transport and maritime industry, having led the strategic direction of Svitzer Australia in both a domestic and global context. Before joining Svitzer, he worked as a senior government adviser in transport and infrastructure, including in the Offices of the Prime Minister, Deputy Prime Minister and Minister for Transport and Infrastructure.

Port of Newcastle's Chair Professor Roy Green said "Craig's commercial and political experience, combined with his industry knowledge and strategic skills, make him an ideal leader for the further development and diversification of the Port of Newcastle and continuing transformation of the Hunter region economy".

Craig is known for his ability to work effectively across the political spectrum. Through his various industry and government roles, he has acquired a keen awareness of the major challenges and opportunities in managing NSW's growing freight task, particularly to secure a level playing field for productivity-enhancing port competition and innovation.

Craig said "I am delighted to join the world's largest coal export port. I look forward to leading the organisation and working with the team at the Port of Newcastle and all its stakeholders to progress the Port's diversification agenda, including the development of a container terminal, to ensure regional growth and an efficient freight and logistics network for NSW."

Craig will take over from Geoff Crowe, who has led the organisation for 3 years.

Professor Green said "I am absolutely confident that Craig will build on the achievements and leadership of Geoff Crowe to drive the next phase of the Port's growth and diversification strategy, maintaining our excellent safety record and strengthening our relationships with industry and community".

Mr Carmody will commence his role at Port of Newcastle on 1 August 2018.
