From Shakespeare to Melville, the sea has been a source of inspiration for generations of poets and writers.
This year, Port of Newcastle is proud to be sponsoring the Newcastle Writers Festival, with the Port of Newcastle Marquee in Wheeler Place housing a full line-up of award-winning writers and poets across this weekend's event, including Jackie French, Nick Earls and Melinda Smith.
The free Family Day will also be held in the marquee on Saturday, 8 April, from 10am to 2pm.
Now in its fifth year, the Newcastle Writers Festival is a celebration of stories, writing and ideas. Since the inaugural event in 2013, the Festival has continued to get bigger and better. This year's program is the most ambitious yet and includes 140 writers across 85 sessions - more than half of which are free - and more than 7000 attendees are expected.
Port of Newcastle CEO, Geoff Crowe, said: "As a sponsor of the Newcastle Writers Festival in 2017, Port of Newcastle is pleased to support the premier event in the city's cultural calendar."
The Newcastle Writers Festival is held 7-9 April in the Civic Precinct. Tickets are still available and can be purchased via Ticketek.
